This fold-away arm rest (1) hinges on an arm rest carrier (3). The height of the arm rest can be adjusted by means of an electrically operated spindle (9) driving a slide (8) welded to the arm rest carrier. The arm rest and its carrier are coupled by a relative position adjuster drive (10) consisting of a pinion segment (11) pivoting on the arm rest carrier which meshes with a fixed vertical rack (12). The pinion segment is mounted on a pulley which is connected by a toothed belt (13) to a pulley fixed to the arm rest hinge pin (2) so that the arm rest, when it is swung from its operating position to its stowed position, the arm rest takes up its correct height.
