A washing agent for the selective desulfurization of gases, comprises an N,N'-disubstituted imidazoline of formula, an N-substituted or N,N'-disubstituted dihydroimidazolone, an N,N'-disubstituted imidazolidindione or an N-substituted dihydroimidazoldione. A washing agent (I), based on an N-substituted nitrogen heterocycle, for the selective desulfurization of gases, comprises: (A) an N,N'-disubstituted imidazoline of formula (1a) or (1b); (B) an N-substituted or N,N'-disubstituted dihydroimidazolone of formula (2a)-(2d); (C) an N,N'-disubstituted imidazolidindione of formula (3) or (D) an N-substituted dihydroimidazoldione of formula (4a) or (4b) RN,RN' = 1-4C alkyl or 2-4C alkenyl whereby the ring carbon atoms are optionally substituted by 1-4C alkyl or 2-4C alkenyl An Independent claim is included for a process for the selective desulfurization of gases by washiing with the agent (I).
