PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic disk apparatus which improves a settling response in an operation and by which a recording and reproducing operation can be performed stably and at high speed, by a method wherein an initial displacement is given to a fine adjustment mechanism in advance according to the movement distance of a head, and the head is settled in a target position. SOLUTION: A positioning control and computing part selects a head. After that, position information on a position-information recording region which is recorded on a disk face facing the head is detected so as to be demodulated. A carriage 611 as a whole is driven by a VCM 612 which is composed of magnets 614, 615 and a coil 613. The head is moved to a target position. After the head reaches a part near the target position, a fine adjustment mechanism which corresponds to the selected head is driven jointly. Data is recorded and reproduced with reference to a data recording region. The finish of a seek operation is judged on the basis of a position error during a settling operation. An observed settling waveform and a previously observed waveform are averaged and processed, and settling-sequence advance information is updated.
