The respiration apparatus has a volume displacement device (2) used for providing preset respiration patterns, coupled to the gas feed system (3) for supplying the patient with the respiration gas, with measurement of the respiration pressure and the respiration gas flow. A control unit (25) acts as an input device for selecting the respiration pattern by controlling the volume displacement device, with the measured respiration pressure and respiration gas flow values obtained during the previous respiration pattern used as setting parameters for the new respiration pattern, upon switching the respiration pattern.
