The pipe bending machine, in which the pipe (2) passes between a matrix (3) and a counter matrix (1) to produce a bend of the required shape, has the channel along its counter matrix made with a varying configuration and tapering from its inlet end to its outlet end. The intake end of the counter-matrix channel is of approximately semi-circular section, with upper walls having an inclination which is accentuated towards the outlet end. The base of the counter-matrix channel has a lengthwise recess which starts about a quarter of the way along its length, increases in section towards the outlet end and then tapers to form a truncated halfcone.
