PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent composition which is excellent in safety has a high detergency, and is useful for washing food by compounding a baking product of shells with saponin in a specified ratio. SOLUTION: A baking product of shells is compounded with saponin in a wt. ratio of (2,000/1)-(1/2). The baking product is prepared by baking shells at about 600-1,200 deg.C and is pulverized before being used. The particle size of the baking product is preferably such that it passes through a 250-mesh sieve. Scallop shells are preferable as shells for the baking product. The most preferable saponin is quilaja saponin. If necessary, a surfactant generally used for washing food, e.g. a fatty acid ester, is compounded. Preferable fatty acid esters are sugar fatty acid esters, glycerin fatty acid esters, sorbitan fatty acid esters, and propylene glycol fatty acid esters. A fatty acid ester is compounded preferably in a wt. ratio to the baking product of about (2,000/1)-(1/1).
