The water heater (1) has a heat exchanger (3) heated by a burner (2) and mounted in a water path (22) contg. a limiter (16) and throughput sensor (14) and leading from a cold water source (12) to a tap valve (19). The throughput sensor signal is used to adjust a gas valve (8) in a gas line (7) to the burner. A water path bypass line (24) governed by a choke valve (25) is connected in parallel with the series circuit contg. the limiter and heat exchanger and contains a further limiter (27).
