Fine coal and dust having a high proportion of volatile components is partially degreased and subsequently hot briquetted. The tar components of the coal are used as binder and the briquettes obtained are used in the heated state in the melt-down gasifier. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the production of pig iron and also the preliminary products for steel comprising a degassing reactor (27) for partially degassing fine coal, and a hot briquetting plant (28) joined to the melt-down gasifier (6) by a conveyor line (7).
