A rod is manufactured by placing a first part in a mould. This part has an elongate rigid body extending between two sleeves. Each sleeve is frangibly connected to a mounting frame within the sleeve. An elastomeric connection between each sleeve and its frame is formed in the mould. The frangible connections are then broken. The frames may be rings. The elastomeric connection between one frame and its sleeve may be two diametrically opposite spokes and an intermediate ring between the sleeve and ring is attached to the spokes . The other sleeve and ring are coupled by an elastomeric disc.
