摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit display of prescribed patterns without the consumption of electric power even when a power source is off and to eliminate the need for increasing the number of terminals of a driver IC with an increase in the display patterns. SOLUTION: A transparent electrode 17A is laid on a transparent substrate 13. The transparent electrode 17A is connected to the outside liquid crystal drive circuit via an extraction pattern 17Aa. The transparent substrate 13 is patterned and printed with a sealing material S' for forming a space for sealing liquid crystals by hermetically sealing the circumferences of the two transparent substrates. A pattern shape of a transverse rectilinear form covering the extraction pattern 17Aa and a pattern shape indicating a character 'OFF' are formed within the display area (on the inner side of an alternate long and two short dashes line f) of the liquid crystal display device by the sealing material S'. Another transparent substrate is superposed on the transparent substrate 13 and the liquid crystals of a high-polymer dispersion type are injected from a notch H. The sealing material S' has nearly the same transmittance as the transmittance of the liquid crystals in a state of allowing the transmission of light. The liquid crystals attain the state of diffusing the light and the pattern indicating the character 'OFF' is displayed in the state that the liquid crystal display device is not energized.
