PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image pickup device, capable of obtaining high quality video without bringing about the white compression of a subject, when photographing the subject in a wedding ceremony hall, on a stage, etc. with spotlight turned on the subject. SOLUTION: A luminance signal detection circuit 405 applies a plurality of gates to a video signal from an AGC circuit 403, extracts and integrates a video luminance signal corresponding to each region of the image pickup face of a CCD 402, respectively calculates its average light quantity as a photometric value, and a luminance signal peak value detection circuit 101 applies a plurality of gates to the video signal from the circuit 403, extracts and integrates a video luminance signal corresponding to an area with the highest luminance and calculates its average light quantity as a photometric value. An AE control signal operation circuit 102 calculates a photometric value used in actual exposure control, by performing prescribed operation processing on the basis of each photometric value of the circuit 405 and the photometric value of the circuit 101.
