The invention discloses a transglutaminase from Streptoverticillium mobarense which has an activity independent of Ca<+2> and an improved activity at pH 7.0 and pH 9.0 as compared to commercially available bacterial transglutaminases. Also disclosed are isolated nucleic acid molecules that can be used to make the transglutaminase as well as antibodies to detect the transglutaminase.
