PURPOSE: A variable length decoder is provided to significantly reduce the area and to improve the decoding speed by processing only meaningful code words. CONSTITUTION: A variable length decoder includes the second latch(200) for latching given bit words for received bit stream. The first latch(100) latches the bit words from the second latch(200). A left/right shift circuit(300) shifts the output value of the first and second latches(100,200) in the left direction and then shifts them in the right direction depending on the code length. A comparator(400) compares the value of the second latch(200) and the output values of the left/right shifter(300) in order to enable the first and second latches(100,200). A forward/backward separator(500) groups the code words from the left/right shifter(300) and combines the code length values for corresponding code words and the backward value to generate decoded words.
