PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chuck device capable of chucking a work without breakage and commonly usable to various kinds of works by arranging two sliders performing approaching and separating motions on a linear guide, and mounting a pair of elastic tape-like retaining members between both side surfaces of the two sliders. SOLUTION: When two sliders 2 and 3 are approached to each other by a proper driving mechanism, a pair of elastic tape-like retaining members 4 and 5 is swollen outward in loop form, and a work W is set in the inner part. When the sliders 2, 3 are mutually separated from this state, the tape-like retaining members 4 and 5 are moved toward the center, deformed along the outer circumferential surface of the elliptic work W, and finally closely fitted to the outer circumferential surface to chuck the work W. At this time, a force is added form the tape-like retaining members 4, 5 to the outer circumferential surface of the work W. However the own masses of the tape-like retaining members 4, 5 are small because of their small thickness and light weight, and even if they are closely fitted to the outer circumferential surface of the work W at a rather high speed, the outer circumferential surface of the work is never broken.
