PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red fluorescent material having a controllable particle size and good light-emitting properties and a light-emitting device produced by using the material. SOLUTION: The invention provides a nitride-based fluorescent material or an oxynitride-based fluorescent material doped with europium, emitting red light by absorbing near ultraviolet ray or blue light, expressed by general formula: Ca<SB>x</SB>Al<SB>y</SB>Si<SB>z</SB>O<SB>a</SB>N<SB>b</SB>:Eu<SP>2+</SP>(x, y, z, a and b satisfy the following formulas), further containing a rare earth metal fluoride or a rare earth metal chloride and having an average particle diameter of preferably≥5μm and≤10μm. 0.5≤x≤3, 0.5≤y≤3, 0.5≤z≤9, 0≤a≤3 and 0.5≤b≤3.
