The computer has an elongated pen body (10) with a writing end with a rotatable ball bearing (15) forming a ball point pen tip (16). First and second encoding groups (2,2') on the writing end of the pen body encode the movement of the ball bearing along X- and Y- directions to produce corresp. signals. A character recognition arrangement identifies the written characters from the X- and Y-signals.
