Disclosed is the compound of formula (Ia) in racemic or optically pure form, in free acid, salt, ester or delta-lactone, i.e. internal ester, form; and a process for preparing thereof by stereoselective reduction of a corresponding compound of formula (IIa), wherein R1 is an ester group inert to the reaction conditions, such as alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or benzyl. The compounds disclosed exhibit antiatherosclerotic, antihyperlipidemic and antihypercholesterolemic activities. |
