PCT No. PCT/JP94/01480 Sec. 371 Date May 8, 1995 Sec. 102(e) Date May 8, 1995 PCT Filed Sep. 7, 1994 PCT Pub. No. WO95/09066 PCT Pub. Date Apr. 6, 1995A piercing control method is provided to reduce the time required for piercing operation by a laser beam is made substantially zero. When a previous cutting operation is completed, a machining head is subjected to motion control so as to be moved to a subsequent cutting start point, and when the start of deceleration at t2 is detected, a piercing start position is obtained. Specifically, using a set distance previously stored in memory, the piercing start position is set at a position which is advanced from the deceleration start position by the set distance. When the machining head reaches the piercing start position at time t4 during the deceleration, a laser beam output command is issued to start the piercing from this point of time. The piercing is completed at time t5 simultaneously with completion of positioning at the cutting start point. Simultaneously with completion of the piercing at time t5, the subsequent cutting operation is started. Accordingly, the time required for the piercing can be made substantially zero, making it possible to reliably shorten the machining time.
