PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize excellent viewing angle characteristics in all directions of a screen at a low cost. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is constructed with a liquid crystal cell comprising a first substrate and a second substrate, on the inside face of each of which a transparent electrode for pixel selection is formed, placed opposite to each other with a specified gap, stuck on their circumference of the display region with a sealant and enclosing a liquid crystal layer in the gap, a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate located on the light incident side and the light emitting side of the liquid crystal cell, respectively, and a first optical retardation plate and a second optical retardation plate inserted between the first polarizing plate and the first substrate and between the second polarizing plate and the second substrate, respectively. Within the layer of the first polarizing plate 14A, transparent particles 19 are dispersed over the whole display area of the liquid crystal cell.
