The lock system has a controller (4) with at least two states, e.g. for unlocking and/or locking car doors, the ignition lock, the steering wheel lock or similar, and an associated electronic key (5). The controller and key have signal transmitting and receiving arrangements. At least one signal transferred between them is an encoded control signal so that the state of the controller is changed after a positive evaluation of the signal from an authorized key, provided that evaluation of the signal transition time gives a value, e.g. a phase value, within a predefined range. An Independent claim is also used for a method of operating the closure system.
