A heat absorbing film (14) consisting of oxides is formed on a conductive reflecting film (13) by applying and firing sol in which materials to be formed into oxides are in a colloidal form, thereby it is possible to form the heat absorbing film (14) with very small variations in thickness and quality on the conductive reflecting film (13) without the need of changing operating conditions for both a vacuum deposition device for forming the conductive reflecting film (13) and an application/firing device for forming the heat absorbing film (14). Accordingly, heat reflection and radiation from the conductive reflection film (13) to a color selection electrode is effectively suppressed to make it possible to produce a color cathode ray tube little in color purity degradation.
