PURPOSE: A system for controlling a virtual reality character at real time is provided to control simply the motion of the virtual reality character without a high cost motion capture system. CONSTITUTION: A system for controlling a virtual reality character at real time comprises a CPU(1), a 1st input peripheral(2), a 2nd input peripheral(3), a 3rd input peripheral(4), a body part motion vector memory(5), a pattern motion data memory(6), a facial expression data memory(7), a work memory(8), a ROM(9), a graphic system(10) and an output peripheral(11). The input peripherals(2,3,4) includes a keyboard or a joystick. The 1st input peripheral(2) can be a keyboard whose key designates a position vector of the body parts, the 2nd input peripheral(3) whose key designates a facial expression of the character, and the 3rd input peripheral(4), for example a joystick, whose orientation designates a rotating direction and angle of body joints. The graphic system makes the graphic images by reading various data from the memories(5,6,7,8) corresponding to the designations of the input peripherals(2,3,4).
