A master information medium comprises a nonmagnetic substrate, on which a thin ferromagnetic layer is formed to record patterns corresponding to the signal patterns of information to be recorded. The thin ferromagnetic layer is a soft or semihard magnetic layer having a coercive force less than 40 kA/m measured along information signal tracks. The thin ferromagnetic layer has residual magnetism greater than the coercive force of the magnetic recording medium along the information signal track. The master information medium exhibits improved magnetic recording performance.
