The restraint system includes an occupant sensor to detect the type of the occupant (baby, small child, older child or adult) (5, 7, 9, 10) on the seat and a tensile stress switch (3) which goes to a certain condition when a preset value (first switching value) of tensile stress on the seat belt is exceeded and another condition for other situations. The operating mode for the restraint system depends on the states of the occupant sensor and the tensile stress switch.
