Aqueous solutions of perpropionic and perbutyric acids, are prepared according to the process of the parent Specification, whereby hydrogen peroxide and the corresponding carboxylic acid, in a molar ratio of peroxide:acid greater than one, are reacted in the presence of an acid catalyst to give the percarboxylic acid which, together with water, is distilled from the reaction mixture. Examples describe the preparation of peracids from propionic, n-butyric and iso-butyric acids using sulphuric acid as the catalyst and oxyethane-diphosphonic acid as a stabilizer for the reaction mixture. |
