PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To test and identify a data storage medium more efficiently and to shorten a processing time by checking the kind of statistics of use in a hierarchical table regarding the statistics of use and selecting adaptive parameters belonging to a corresponding specific group of adaptive parameters. SOLUTION: The investigation 3 of statistics 4 of use is carried out. The statistics 4 of use are a table of hierarchical order. Selection 6 selects a special group of parameters 8 for a 1st kind by using a table of correspondence 7. Specific groups of parameters 8 for respective kinds correspond to groups of parameters. A test 9 uses the specific group of parameters 8 to determine whether or not a data storage medium corresponds to it. When the data storage medium corresponds to the group of parameters 8, the kind of the data storage medium is identified. The examination 10 of the state decides whether or not the kind is identified and when it corresponds to the group of parameters 8, the kind of the data storage medium is identified.
