Compositions and methods for treatment and prevention of ischemia-related conditions, such as ischemia reperfusion injury and cellular dysfunction, are disclosed. The methods are directed to administering pharmaceutical compositions containing at least one compound derived from vitamin B6, such as pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine.
