PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner capable of storing a refrigerant in an outdoor machine by making use of temperature and pressure conditions after interruption of the operation, and hence of preventing a large amount of the refrigerant from leaking into a room even though pump-down operation is not performed. SOLUTION: In the present air conditioner, a control section 17 controls a motor driven expansion valve 2 and a 4-way changeover valve 5 that constitute a closing mechanism based upon outdoor temperature and indoor temperature, whereby a most part of a refrigerant is stored in an outdoor machine 13. As a typical example, upon interruption of operation after cooling operation and when the outdoor temperature is higher than the indoor temperature, the refrigerant is liable to move from the outdoor machine 13 at which the refrigerant chiefly stays during the operation to the indoor machine 10, so that the closing mechanism 10 is interrupted by fully closing the motor driven expansion valve 2 and setting the 4-way changeover valve 5 to a cooling position. Even if pump-down operation is not performed, the refrigerant is stored in the outdoor machine, and hence a large amount of the refrigerant is prevented from leaking into a room.
