PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval engine in which an optical information processing using a spatial light modulator is closely connected with a computer for retrieving similar images. SOLUTION: A comparison original image 10a' is converted into an optical image by a liquid crystal panel 21a, and an image 10a (10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f, and 10a") to be retrieved which are present in a magnetic disk 5 are converted into an optical image by a liquid crystal panel 21b, and enlarged by a zoom lens 22 so that matching with the comparison original image can be attained. Afterwards, the level of the matching of the both images is detected by an optical arithmetic part 20. The optical arithmetic part 20 modulates two optical images to be compared by a first spatial light modulator 25a, and the modulated output is Fourier transformed by a first Fourier transformation lens so that a first Fourier pattern can be obtained. Moreover, the first Fourier pattern is modulated by a second spatial light modulator 25b, and the modulated output is Fourier transformed by a second Fourier transformation lens so that a second Fourier pattern can be obtained. The light intensity indicated by this pattern is used as the index of the level of the similarity of the both images, and whether or not the image 10a to be retrieved is similar to the comparison original image 10a' is judged. |
