The mechanism consists of inlet (4) and exhaust (3) ducts on opposite sides of a cylinder and joining to enter it through a single aperture with one valve (1). A deflector (2) on a controlled pivot (10) through which the valve stem passes is position to govern the flow through the two ducts, and the geometry of the deflector and the space in which it pivots enable it to move without opening one duct before the other is partially or totally closed. In one variant of the design the deflector can comprise two components which open and close the two ducts simultaneously but by separate commands, e.g. electromagnetic.
