A water blocking compound for sheathed stranded cables, the compound being a gel consisting of a major proportion by weight of a substantially non-volatile liquid in which has been dispersed a minor proportion by weight of a solid gellant which is insoluble in said liquid and which does not melt below 100 DEG C, the gel being substantially devoid of any gellant which is soluble in the liquid and/or melts below 100 DEG C.
