PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slide member and its wear detecting method which can detect the wear without requiring electrodes or wiring. SOLUTION: The slide member 3 is formed by using ceramics as its base phase and dispersing ferromagnetic particles 6 in the base phase. Here, the slide member 3 is arranged on a surface layer 2b satisfying 0<t<ta, where (t) is the depth from the slide surface of a slide component 2 and ta is the wear depth which is allowed for the slide component 2; and the surface layer 2b is polarized to an N and an S pole. The base phase is one or several compositions among silicon carbide, silicon nitride, sialon, alumina, and zirconia. The ferromagnetic particles 6 are iron nitride particles represented as Fex Ny , speciallyσ-Fe4 N orε-FeN8 . The slide member 3 is arranged only in a boundary lubrication area wherein solid bodies come into contact with the surface layer of the slide component 2.
