PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure high sensitivity, superior shoulder gradation and latent image stability by high illumination exposure by subjecting silver halide particles contg. a specified amt. of silver chloride to gold-sulfur sensitization at a specified temp., adding a sensitizing dye after cooling to a specified temp. and then adding a bromide. SOLUTION: Silver halide particles contg. >=90 mol.% silver chloride are subjected to gold-sulfur sensitization at >=60 deg.C. After cooling to <=50 deg.C, a sensitizing dye is added and then a bromide is added. The pref. amt. of the bromide is 0.1-3.0 mols, particularly 0.4-2.0 mols per 1 mol silver halide. The bromide is preferably added in the presence of an iridium compd. The pref. amt. of the iridium compd. is 10<-9> -10<-5> mol, particularly 10<-8> -10<-6> mol per 1 mol silver halide. The bromide is preferably fine silver bromide particles particularly having <=0.2μm particle diameter.
