Coating material with a reduced tendency to drip or run, useful especially as a clearcoat for painting cars

Coating material based on a carboxy-functional polymer binder, an epoxide crosslinker and possibly other components, with an anti-drip additive consisting of an insoluble, finely-divided, solid urea compound which is prepared or predispersed in at least part of the crosslinker component. Coating material containing a binder/crosslinker system, organic solvent(s), anti-drip additive and optionally pigments and/or fillers and other paint additives, in which the binder/crosslinker comprises (A) 20-80 wt% carboxy-functional (meth)acrylate copolymer(s) and/or polyester(s) with an acid number of 20-300 mg KOH/g, (B) 20-80 wt% epoxide-functional crosslinker (with A + B = 100 wt%), (C) 0-30 wt% (based on A + B) polymer-polyol(s), (E) 0-20 wt% other different crosslinker(s), (F) 0-10 wt% mono-epoxide(s) and (D) 0.1-3 wt% (based on resin solids) of an anti-drip additive comprising finely-divided solid urea compound(s), insoluble in the coating material and prepared beforehand in the presence of at least part of component (B). An Independent claim is also included for a multi-coat painting process in which the topcoat is produced with the claimed coating material, preferably in the form of a clearcoat.
