A mixture of short-chain polysulfide silanes of the formula: (RO)3SiC3H6SnC3H6Si(OR)3 wherein R is methyl or ethyl and n is a positive number having a distribution whose average falls in the range: 2.2 ≤ n ≤ 2.8 is prepared by reacting metal polysulfides, typically Na2Sn with a halogenopropyltrialkoxysilane of the formula: (RO)3SiC3H6X wherein X is halogen.
