A polycarbonate resin improved in hue and suitable for use as a substrate for transfer type optical recording media such as optical disks. The polycarbonate resin is obtained by reacting starting materials comprising a diphenol, a carbonate material, and a blocking agent comprising phenol having a long-chain substituent in the para position (p-substituted phenol), and is characterized in that the content of phenol having a long-chain substituent in an ortho position (o-substituted phenol) as an impurity in the blocking agent satisfies the following relationship: (content of o-substituted phenol), (content of p-substituted phenol)+(content of o-substituted phenol) x 10<6> wherein C number means the number of carbon atoms in the organic substituent in each substituted phenol.
