PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate wiping-out and removal of a foreign matter of a seat part of an electric control pressure regulator and to secure reliability by operat ing a means to change supply pressure of fuel by frequency different from normal operating frequency in detecting abnormality of the means to change fuel supply pressure. SOLUTION: Fuel pressure to be supplied to an injector 13 is controlled by adjusting return fuel quantity by an electric control pressure regulator 41, and the regulator 41 is duty-controlled by retrieving a map of control fuel pressure to be decided by an engine driving condition. At this time, a cleaning mode is selected at the time of measuring fuel pressure in the middle of driving and of showing a characteristic to be appear in the case when a foreign matter is adhered on a seat part of the regulator 41 in a region lower than specified control fuel pressure. Additionally, in the case when an engine is in a fuel cutting region of deceleration, a means to change supply pressure of fuel is operated by frequency different from normal operating frequency and the foreign matter adhered on the seat part is eliminated by impact.
