PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new dithiin derivative having a 1,2-dithiin-3,6-diyl group as a skeletal structure, having a relatively low melting point, exhibiting a liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range, and useful as a component for giving a smectic C phase to ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a 2-15C alkyl, an alkoxy(carbonyl) or the like; R2 is a 2-15C alkoxy or an optically active group; A1 -A4 are each a single bond, 1,4-phenyl (substituted by one or more halogen atoms or the like) or the like, wherein one or more of A1 -A4 are each the single bond]. For example, 3-(3-fluoro-4-heptyloxyphenyl)-6-(4-pentylphenyl)-1,2-dithiin. A compound of formula II belonging to the compound of formula I is obtained by subjecting a p-R1 -substituted ethynylbenzene iodide with a p-R2 -substituted ethynylbenzene to a cross-coupling reaction, reacting the obtained compound of formula III with t-butylthiol and subsequently reacting the obtained compound of formula IV with iodine or the like. |
