PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a hydroxyapatite fiber, non toxic, excellent in biological affinity and safety and useful for biomaterials by reacting a specific formed body under a specific condition to form hydroxyapatite and removing CaO. SOLUTION: This production of a hydroxyapatite fiber is to prepare a formed body comprising 1 pt.wt. of calcium metaphosphate [β-Ca(PO3 )]2 fiber and preferably 1 pt.wt. (as CaO) of powdery quick lime (CaO), slaked lime [Ca(OH)2 ] or calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ), heat treat the formed body in air, e.g. at 800-1200 deg.C for >=1 hour to react calcium metaphosphate with CaO to form hydroxyapatite, remove CaO from the heat treated formed body, and extract hydroxyapatite fiber to obtain the objective hydroxyapoatite fiber.
