PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heavy metal-catching agent capable of efficiently catching one or more heavy metals and useful for waste water treatment and the like by including a copolymer obtained by replacing the chloro groups of a specific vinyl chloride copolymer with substituents having a heavy metal-catching ability. SOLUTION: This heavy metal-catching agent comprises a copolymer having a mol.wt. of 2,000-50,000 and obtained by copolymerizing 50-70 mol.% of vinyl chloride with 30-50 mol.% of maleic anhydride preferably in a solvent such as chlorobenzene, having a chain transfer constant of <100×10<-4> to the vinyl chloride at 40-60 deg.C by a solution polymerization method at 30-80 deg.C and subsequently replacing the chloro groups of the copolymer by a compound having a metal-catchable substituent such as N, N-di(hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamic acid.
