PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the capability of absorbing alkyl sulfides by producing a bromine bearing activated carbon by depositing and adding oxygen and bromine in respectively specified amounts as surface oxides. SOLUTION: This bromine-bearing activated carbon to be used for removing alkyl sulfides from a gas containing low concentration of alkyl sulfides contains 2.5 wt.% or less oxygen and 3 wt.% or more bromine as a surface oxide. The raw material of the activated carbon is produced by using, for example, coal, coke, charcoal, coconut husk, resin, petroleum residue, etc., and those which have specific surface area of about 100-2,000 m<2> /g are used. On the other hand, various kinds of oxides such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, etc., are example as the surface oxide. In order to suppress the oxygen to 2.0 wt.% as the content of the surface oxide before bromine is deposited on the activated carbon carrier, the raw activated carbon is heated at 500-1,100 deg.C in the absence of oxygen. |
