<p>A system and method for creating index values supporting the settlement of property risk transfer contracts. The system accepts as input exposure and claim transaction records obtained from a selected group of property insurance companies, demographic data, and geographic data describing the interrelationship between geographic units. Based upon the specifics of the desired risk transfer contracts, the computer selects the relevant subset of experience data and defines a set of geographic Reporting Units. The system extracts and summarizes the exposure and claim data for a set of index reporting units. Claim data may be further analyzed to define catastrophic events as sets of claims related by proximity in space and time. Index values are computed for each Reporting Unit. Loss-to-Value Ratios for larger units of geography are formed through a system of fixed weights. Index values for alternate units of geography may also be computed from the reporting unit index values through a system of weights based on the demographic daa. The index values are then made available for the settlement of the risk transfer contracts.</p> |
