The drive units (18) are so coupled, that on appropriate activation, at least two of the holders (14,14') are moved into a parking position, safely away from the cell material. They are alternatively moved into the working position. Preferred features:- The parking position is above the plane containing the cell material (21). Here, clearance is sufficient to allow free movement of the instrument (11) above the cell material. Instrument holders are actuated simultaneously, or in time sequence, for movement between various positions. The mounting (13) is accommodated in a positioner (19) having a fine drive, allowing the mounting to be moved in three dimensions. This drive incorporates memory, permitting storage and retrieval of adjustment positions. On activation, the holders are moved as required in the working position.
