PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new enzyme involved in the production of e.g. ganglioside playing an important role in the development, maintenance and restoration of the nervous system comprising a glycosyltransferase with β1-3- galactosyltransferase activity including a specific amino acid sequence. SOLUTION: This objective enzyme is a new glycosyltransferase having an amino acid sequence from Ser at the 26th position to Ser at the 371st position of an amino acid sequence described in the formula, or an amino acid sequence wherein one or more amino acids are deleted, substituted or added in the above amino acid sequence, having β1,3-galactosyltransferase activity, playing an important role in development, maintenance and restoration of the nervous system and useful for production of e.g. ganglioside useful for neurotrophic effectiveness under the various pathological conditions, and useful for repairing efficacy for toxic agents, nervous trauma and ischemic impairments. This enzyme is obtained by screening rat brain cDNA library and introducing the gene obtained into an expression vector and expressing the gene in host bacteria. |
