An improved applicator for medicinal, therapeutic, pharmaceutical, and/or cosmetic preparations comprising an applicator head (10) having a foam applicator head (14), a flexible tubular reservoir (38) for storing the preparation, and a cap to seal off the applicator end of the applicator head; the foam having one or more slits (50D) which form communication passageways between the reservoir and the applicator head and which are compressed by the cap (70) to prevent migration of air from the exterior into the reservoir and passage of preparation from the reservoir to the applicator head when the cap is seated on the applicator head.
