The invention relates to a method, specially the Claus process, for obtaining elemental sulfur by combustion of hydrogen sulfide or a gas containing hydrogen sulfide. According to said method, the hydrogen sulfide or gas containing hydrogen sulfide undergoes partial combustion by means of a first device in a burner of a combustion chamber using added air as an oxidizing agent. The oxygen or gas containing oxygen is fed into the combustion chamber by at least one second additional device pertaining to said combustion chamber. The hydrogen sulfide or gas containing hydrogen sulfide is afterburned and is then fed to a waste heat boiler, whereupon it is fed to one or more reactors.
