Measuring or sensing the downhole environment electrically, acoustically, mechanically, or by nuclear means, either the borehole fluid or surrounding subsurface strata is well stablished practice, However, the techniques or measuring the downhole environment and performing the hole finding function are currently mutually exclusive. To combine the abillity to measure or sense the downhole environment actively from within or as part of holefinding apparatus so that such a device can provide both mechanical and sensing fuctions simultaneously, or serially, is the focus of the present invention. A preferred embodiment of the present invention integrates a series of electrodes of the tip of the holefinding apparatus such that the holefinder can measure borehole fluid resistivity and spontaneous potential. Orientation and position with respect to themselves and the surrounding environment is germane to the design. Extensive modeling shows the electrode arrangement used has a superior measurement quality, minimizing borehole size and proximity effects.
