PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the technology capable of decreasing insertion loss in an optical device. SOLUTION: This optical device having one or more input waveguides coupled with one side of a slab optical waveguide 20 and an array 26 of an output waveguide coupled with the other side of the slab optical waveguide is provided with a conversion area 22 directly adjacent to the slab. This slab operates to decrease insertion loss between the waveguide arrays 25, 26 and the slab waveguide 20. The conversion area 22 has a lot of silica paths crossing the waveguide array. The silica paths are gradually decreased in the width with parting from the slab waveguide. In an embodiment in accordance with this invention, the silica paths are parallel with each other and perpendicular to the waveguide arrays 25, 26. The silica paths have the same bending rate as that of the slab waveguide 20 and waveguide arrays 25, 26. |
