The back rest has a panel section (10) to support the back of a user. The backrest angle can be adjusted around a pivot axis (14). The back rest support has a lower end of the panel section (10) positioned around the pivot axis in the form of a half tube which is formed integrally with the panel so that the upper longitudinal edge (12a) of the half tube section is contiguous with the lower edge of the panel section. The half tube section is lens shaped in the plane of the panel so that both longitudinal edges (12a,b) of the half tubes are curved symmetrical to the pivot axis.
