The invention relates to a control device (3) for producing control signals for the operation of a charge, especially a gas discharge lamp (10,15). Said control device is divided up into a first control unit (3a) which is controlled by software and a second pure hardware control unit (3b). Both control units (3a,3b) are connected to each other by a bidirectional connection line, wherein the second control unit (3b) receives exclusively internal operational status information (Iintern) and the first control unit (3a) receives exclusively external control information (Iextern). By dividing the control device up into an exclusively software-controlled part (3a) and a pure hardware part (3b), said device posesses sufficient speed for rapid control processes and sufficient flexibility in relation to changes. The inventive control device (3) is used to advantageous effect in an electronic ballast to operate a gas discharge lamp (10, 15).
